About Firefighters Remembered
Firefighting has always been a dangerous and demanding job. Sadly over the years many firefighters have lost their lives due to the job they do.
Many of these firefighters are remembered only by names on monuments or grave stones. How they died has often been forgotten. Firefighters Remembered attempts to tell the stories of how each firefighter died, sometimes just a simple accident, sometimes an act of heroic bravery.
Bob Wilkinson (a retired London firefighter) saw the Firefighters National Memorial outside St Pauls Cathedral in London. Whilst reading through the lists of firefighters he wondered about the story behind each name.
A few months later Bob decided to do some research to see what he could find out about some of the deaths. The National Memorial gave him just their names. Bob searched the internet which gave him some of the details, but many others proved more difficult. Through newspaper archives, ancestry forums and old firefighting magazines more information followed.
After 6 years of research Bob feels he now has sufficient material for Firefighters Remembered which will be updated constantly as and when more information comes to hand.
Firefighters Remembered is simply a way to acknowledge all the UK firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.
